What is the Lenovo ThinkCentre Tiny?

The Lenovo ThinkCentre Tiny is a line of ultra-compact desktop computers designed to deliver business-grade performance in a form factor roughly the size of a hardcover book. Despite their small footprint, these machines pack full desktop processors, support for dual-channel RAM, and in some models, a dedicated low-profile GPU slot — making them far more capable than their size suggests. In our case we will push it to the limit by making a frankenPC. The higher end models offer a PCIE slot for additional expansion with different TDP options which we are going to take advantage of by Installing a GPU just like the picture below shows, also we will make sure the CPU has a copper heatsink and the southbridge is covered by a heatshield and ofcourse a good quality thermal paste (Picture bellow showes what the thermal paste looks like after 6 years if not replaced).

"FrankenPC"

There is a lot of 3D models available online for the ThinkCentre Tiny either by Downloading the files and 3D printing or buying pre-made ones but there are other efficient ways we can better utilize the airflow and all you need is a drill. On the pictures below you can see the scheme of the vent right where the CPU fan air intake is located. In our case this modification reduced the CPU temperature by 7 degrees Celsius.

Choosing the Right RAM and NVMe Storage

Getting the memory and storage right is one of the most critical steps when upgrading a ThinkCentre Tiny. These machines are compact by design and have very little tolerance for incompatible components — the wrong RAM stick or NVMe drive can result in boot failures, throttling, or simply not being detected at all.

For RAM, you need to match both the generation (DDR4 or DDR5 depending on the model) and the form factor — all ThinkCentre Tiny machines use SO-DIMM, not the full-size DIMMs found in tower desktops. Speed also matters: installing faster RAM than the platform supports will cause it to downclock, while installing slower RAM can create a bottleneck. For most 8th–10th gen Intel Tiny models, DDR4-2666 SO-DIMM in a dual-channel configuration (two matching sticks) delivers the best real-world performance.

For NVMe storage, the ThinkCentre Tiny uses an M.2 2242 slot on most models — this is shorter than the common 2280 drives used in most PCs. Using the wrong length will physically not fit. Additionally, some older Tiny models only support SATA M.2 drives, not NVMe PCIe — check your specific model's documentation before purchasing. For models that do support PCIe NVMe, a Gen 3 drive is typically the sweet spot, as Gen 4 drives run hotter and the performance gain is rarely noticeable in everyday workloads.

Finished Product

After sourcing the right components, applying fresh thermal paste, modifying the case for improved airflow, and installing a low-profile GPU via the PCIe riser slot, the end result is a surprisingly capable machine that fits in the palm of your hand. The ThinkCentre Tiny in its upgraded form punches well above its weight — handling everyday productivity, light virtualization, and even some GPU-accelerated workloads without breaking a sweat.

What makes this build satisfying is the total cost. Most of the hardware used here was sourced second-hand for a fraction of what equivalent new hardware would cost. The case modifications cost nothing beyond a drill and a few minutes of work, yet the thermal improvement is measurable. It is a reminder that with the right knowledge, older enterprise hardware can be given a second life that rivals much more expensive alternatives.
